post-op complications

DEAR ALEXIS,
Sorry to hear of your mom's difficulties with surgery. From a medical point
of view, it sounds to me like she has gotten very good care and is on the
improving side. Surgery often has a complicated course with heavy people, but
she should do well now. It sounds to me like she has the most important
ingredient for a healthy recovery - a loving, supportive family. Just help
her make this tremendous adjustment at her own pace.

Best wishes for her quick recovery - please keep us all posted on her
progress.

post-op complications

Thank you everyone for your warm wishes and prayers for my mom. I talked to
my mom today and she sounds much better. I think she's finally turned a
corner.

Some of you wanted some details of her surgery. My mom is 55 years old, and
in pretty good health considering her weight. She does have mild asthma,
borderline diabetes, and severe sleep apnea. She had some kind of stomach
stapling 16 years ago which obviously was a failure. The fact that this was
her second surgery probably complicated matters. This most recent surgery
was done by Dr. Keith Kelly, the head of surgery at the Mayo Clinic in
Scottsdale, AZ. Dr. Kelly said he's performed about 200 of these surgeries.
He seems extremely competent. I don't think any of these complications are
his fault.

I really hope I haven't scared any of you who are planning to have this
surgery. I know that in the long run, this was the best thing, the only
thing, for my mom to do. This surgery was her last chance to reclaim her
life.
