Happiness

Posted by admin on August 31st, 2009 — Posted in Losing weight

I’ve realised it’s impossible to be happy with other people when you’re not happy with yourself. At least for me that’s true, seeing as I wear my emotions on my sleeve. Actually, what’s worse than that? I carry around my own personal billboard and wear my emotions there.

So I had a bit of a breaking point this weekend, this 7am-10pm job that has me sitting down 98% of the time has to change. Thankfully I’ll be cutting back to 3 days a week instead of 5 now that school has started up. I’m running more, eating better, and have a lofty goal of losing about 35-40 lbs. I haven’t been that weight since I was in like the 7th grade, so it is a lofty goal, but an achievable one I think. I just feel slow and lethargic all the time and never feel comfortable in my clothes. Now granted half of that (okay more than half) is because I don’t know how to shop… but hey if I eliminate half of the problem (weight) then I’ll just have ‘learning how to buy clothes’ to fix, and with quite a few girlfriends that should be an easy problem to tackle. :-)

So, here we go. The immediate goal is to get to 135. Then 125. Then 110-115. I’m 5′2″, I have no excuse being at the weight I’m at.

The end. I need to be happy so I can spread the happy.

Let’s Add To Our Obesity Problem…

Posted by admin on August 31st, 2009 — Posted in Losing weight

Have you all seen this?? It’s KFC’s new “Double Down” sandwich…seriously?! Do we really need another “make me fat combo” to choose from during lunchtime?

alg_kentucky_fried_chicken_double_downDon’t even think about trying to justify this as a low-carb option, you’re better off eating the bread…

Instead of two buns, the cheese, bacon, and Colonel’s “sauce” is nestled between two fried chicken breasts! It’s no wonder that there’s no shortage of obese people walking around. Forget the nutrition facts, they should just list the numerous related health issues that you’ll encounter after eating this concoction, maybe that will act as a deterrent.

Furthermore, don’t think you’ll be able to burn off the “Double Down” if your workout is anything like this ridiculous exercise class.

In case you’re all wondering…No, hoopilates will not develop your arm muscles and strength. In fact, you’ll probably burn more calories waiting in line for the “Double Down” sandwich.

Want to carry around less fat? Stop wasting your time with nonsense. Trotting like a hamster on a treadmill isn’t going to get you there and neither will hoopilates. Losing fat requires discipline and hard work. It also requires that you don’t update your Facebook status while exercising.

I’m listing the workout I completed today as well as an additional one a client completed. Are they easy? No…but they’re effective.

Kettlebell Complex – Perform exercise 1A, rest 60 seconds, then perform exercise 1B. Move on to the second group of exercises after 5 sets are completed. It’s short and intense, great for fat loss.

1A. Double Kettlebell Dead Cleans + Front Squat 5×5

1B. Double Kettlebell Bent Rows 5×7

2A. Double Kettlebell Dead Cleans + Overhead Press 5×5

2B. Double Kettlebell Swings 5×10

Barbell Complex – The weight you use is determined by the weakest movement, for most this will be the Push-Press. Perform the exercises one after another without setting the bar down, except during the last two exercises obviously. The goal isn’t strength or hypertrophy so check your ego and use a lighter weight.

2-4×6: Deadlift, Straight Leg Deadlift, Bent Over Row, Front Squat, Push-Press, Alternating Reverse Lunges (Front Squat Barbell Grip), Pushups, Jump-rope (30 seconds).

I hope you all have a great week!

good foodstuff!

Most of us exercise because we want to feel good and look good…right? One half of the equation is “calories out” i.e. exercise. The other half of the equation is “calories in” EATING! Starting Monday September 14th, Spynergy is offering a 4-evening (7:00 to 8:30) workshop to help you manage your calories in a practical and effective way. Lyn Schwartz, MS, RD is a registered dietitian that has taught great workshops on this subject at Universities and Corporations — and will be teaching right at our Spynergy studio in Wellesley! The Art of Being Alone

Posted by admin on August 31st, 2009 — Posted in Losing weight

In the almost 39 years of my life, I have never been alone. As a young adult, I willingly chose to remain at home to take care of my family. Being alone is foreign and strange to me.

My grandmother has been in the nursing for a month now, and to be honest, I miss her tremendously, and my days have been an emotional roller coaster. I cry. I get angry. I get depressed and wallow in self-pity……so many emotions have surfaced that I did not expect.

Sometimes I wonder if this is some kind of weird and wacky form of “empty nest syndrome”. LOL

I never expected this but now that it is here…what do I do about it? My life has been so wrapped up in taking care of everyone else that I don’t know who I am or what I want or what I am. I can give the “christianese” version to answer those questions. I can give the mighty “who am I in Christ” answers….but it still doesn’t answer the beginning question.

Who am I?

Last night I started rearranging the apartment. I cleaned and cleaned until I was exhausted. There is much to do today, and it feels weird to be doing all of this. When my gran was here, everything became dusty and cluttered because it upset her to rearrange furniture or even clean. For the sake of peace, I let things go.

I actually didn’t realize how much I let things go until last night when I started cleaning. It is amazing the things you discover in piles of rubbish. The clutter you never seen before. Parts of daily life that have no useful purpose. Dust bunnies that stare at you….daring you to move them!

I like cleaning. I like the life that is stirring up around me. I like the small changes that is occurring. I like the realization that I can finally create the kind of living space I have always wanted but didn’t realize I wanted. I like being alone.

Although, I have to admit that being alone is scary. All the little bumps in the dark ring loud as I am trying to sleep. Were they always there???? Learning to cook for one person. Reading, watching TV, praying with out interruption. Little things that I never noticed before are becoming visible.

Being alone isn’t that bad.

Being alone is a blessing that I never realized God was waiting to bless me with.

March 2007 - First Steps

Posted by admin on August 31st, 2009 — Posted in Losing weight

So here I was, 315lbs, 30 years old. My future was still ahead of me, but the view wasn’t that great. My parents (whom I adore), both suffer from diabetes, due to being over weight. My mother not only has diabetes, but suffers from high blood pressure and cholesterol. My last checkups even though, up until that point, were not bad, but were on the verge of starting down the wrong path.

I knew I was intelligent, great career, wonderful family, and amazing friends, yet I still felt like I was living my life in limbo. And not the fun horizontal one either. ;) I debated with myself the first few days weather it was vanity that was motivating me, or health. But really I decided it, “did it matter?”. What ever my motivation was, I was going to go with it and analyze it later.

So, knowing that I’ve tried to lose weight in the past, without much success, I knew I needed help. It was not long after my birthday; I called my work benefit help centre and got myself in contact with a nutritionist. I decided taking to a professional and getting some ideas of what I SHOULD be doing is the start.

Weigh In Results!

Posted by admin on August 31st, 2009 — Posted in Losing weight

I weighed myself this morning, and I only lost another .8 pounds!  A little frustrating since I have been exercising like a crazy person for the last two weeks, but better than nothing I suppose!

I am taking today off from the gym, because I’m still sore and I feel like my muscles need a day to reform and get refreshed for my run tomorrow.  Tomorrow I try the 4th level of Couch to 5k again, and I’m terrified!  I hope I do better!

Anyway, I have a bunch of stuff to do today, so I am going to get outta here!

A Continuing Success Story

You may have missed this comment in the Dynamic Warm-up post; as such, I’d like to share it here, as I think it’s so very important, and dare I say, inspirational.  Now the very word inspirational has been so watered down — hackneyed even — that I’m loathe to use it. But really, in this case, I think that it’s justified.  Check it out:

Keith,
As always, I love your writing and appreciate all you do to keep us motivated.
I wanted to write an update on my continued attempts to put theory to practice as I have just reached 101 pounds lost. Having gone from 356 lbs. to 255 lbs. has given me so much vitality and joy. I can now fit in size 36 jeans and XL shirts, coming from size 48’s and 4XL!
I am still pumped about eating well (paleo with minimal cheats) and exercising (beginning Crossfit). I have survived stressful times without binge eating, which was a major concern.
Also, and most importantly to me, I am showing my children that these things are possible. A side note to this point: I have begun having the occasional ice cream with my kids. I felt that it was important to show good eating habits but also the ability to show restraint with foods that kids like. (Thoughts?)
They have begun to see that junk food need not be “everything” and they don’t ask for candy anymore. Well…at least not from me. :)
In fact, last week my dad even asked me to go over my diet with him. He sees the results and knows I am not eating poorly to lose weight and wants in. Yeah!
Anyway, this is where I am.
Hope you and yours are well. Please keep up your great writing.
Thank you,
Jeremy Palmer

A fantastic testimonial for the efficacy of the Paleo lifestyle.  And remember, this is nothing that I’ve created — this “lifestyle”, and the constituent building blocks thereof, have been around since the dawn of mankind.  This is our collective legacy.  I only endeavor to apply these ancient principles, best I can, within the challenges of a modern (and, let’s face it, nutritionally broken) society.  This is the task, the challenge, that confronts each and every one of us — every hour of every day.  Living this lifestyle requires intelligence, wisdom, a good dose of willpower (at least, initially) and a questioning — un-trusting even — attitude.  I’ve met with and conversed with a wide array of Paleo adherents throughout my own Paleo journey, as well as with many would-be, failed practitioners — from just about every ethnicity and socio-economic background you can imagine — and what I’ve found is this: what separates the adherent from the would-be and failed are two things; intelligence and a highly-skeptical, question-authority mindset.  At this point in the game — and until society as whole makes a drastic, nutritional U-turn (which I don’t see as happening in our lifetimes) — only those equipped with the tools and character to “break free of the Matrix” (red pill or blue pill, Neo?) — like our friend Jeremy, here — will succeed at the Paleo endeavor.  This isn’t a pessimist speaking, but the thoughts of a rationalist.  Think about how this manifests on your own lives.  How many of your own friends, family and associates are willing to cast themselves, without a net, into an intellectual solo-flight, an on-going n=1 experiment?  How many are willing to question heretofore “authoritative”, dietary, proclamations, cast aside what they once considered “truth”?  Red pill or blue pill, Neo?  Really, isn’t this what the Buddha asked as well?  Don’t blindly follow me, he said in essence, but tease these things out for yourself, in the laboratory of your own mind and in your own body.  Keep what works, discard what doesn’t.  Above all, though, question; aggressively and ceaselessly question.

And to quickly add my own 2 cents on the question of raising kids within a Paleo framework:

(1) Living as an example is, in my opinion, the best thing you can do, coupled with an on-going discussion of why (at an age-appropriate level, of course) you’ve made this dietary and lifestyle choice.  Do all you can to develop within them the notion of respectful questioning.  Because, let’s face it, sooner or later you have to let them free in the big, woolly (and woefully mis-informed) world, a world governed by — you guessed it — experts.  And being a mainstream “expert” only means that one has majority backing; that may, or may not, connote any modicum of truth.

(2) High dose fish oil, especially in children, will aide in blunting the effects of a less-than-perfect diet.  They will eat crap, no doubt — and lot’s of it — because society at large encourages it, and at a certain point, the need to fit in (or at the very least, not “fit-out”) will override all else.  More on fish oil in a later post.

(3) Personally, I’m not a believer in half-measures — but that’s just me.  I certainly understand where you’re coming from though, Jeremy.  Kids do need to be taught moderation so as to equip them for navigating the real, un-informed world.  This is a touchy question, and I’m calling out to experienced TTP readers to weigh-in on this one.  The way I approached this with my own was to say I choose not to partake because (insert age-appropriate reasoning).  Ultimately, though, you have to make your own choices about how to treat your own body and your own health.  Now, my kids were much older when I began this journey, and were familiar with this kind of talk, usually, though, centered around political ideals, or fitness/sports training topics, drugs, alcohol, sex, etc.  Of course, if I had young children in my home now, they wouldn’t even have access to “bad” foodstuffs (I can see me being a very unpopular grandpa), and hopefully their very early-established “tastes” would help moderate them through the real-world minefield once it was (inevitably) unleashed upon them.  My gut feeling is though, Jeremy, that you know what’s best for your kids at this particular juncture in their lives.  I’m an all-or-nothing kind of guy, and I was an all-or-nothing kid as well.  One thing the years have taught me is that the vast majority of people do not operate that way.  My coaching style works well and is fit for an athletic/sporting environment; in the general public, well…not so much  :)

I’ll end the day’s pontification there, as I’ve gone on long, long enough.  The real point of this post is to acknowledge a gentleman who has fought the good fight well, and is flying the Paleo flag proudly.  My hope is that Jeremy’s action and success can ignite a desire in others (especially his kids) to do the same.

Here’s to you, Jeremy!  Good work!

In health,

Keith

Läkare ska informera på ett för folket trovärdigt sätt

Posted by admin on August 31st, 2009 — Posted in Diet

diet tips for Ramadhan 9/9

Posted by admin on August 31st, 2009 — Posted in Diet

JOINT PAINS

Causes: During Ramadhan, when extra Salah are performed, the pressure on the knee joints increases. In the elderly and those with arthritis, this may result in pain, stiffness, swelling and discomfort.

Remedy: Lose weight so that the knees do not have to carry any extra load. Exercise the lower limbs before Ramadhan so that they can be prepared for the additional strain. Being physically fit allows greater fulfillment, thus enabling one to be able to perform Salah with ease.
