Short term or long term fat loss. There are many ways to lose weight  quickly, but I know of one close to perfect way to lose fat, eat your favorite foods and get a great body for good. I worked at a stereo store as a kid and one of the guys used to build the stereo/tv cabinets. He used to be in such a rush all the time  and claimed he didn’t have time to read the instructions. Sure enough he would often build them wrong and have to do it all over again. One of the salesman who would smile and say to him

Is 6 Minutes All You Really Need To Workout??

As time crunched a I am, I’m ALWAYS looking for the most effective and efficient way to get in my workouts.  Who has 7-8 hours of extra time to workout during the week these days?

You all know how much of a fan I am of interval training.  Every study and real world client I ever had has benefited more from interval than aerobics–hands down.

Check this new study–one that supports the research again– that came out from Gibala.

Here’s a shortened version of the study:

Each of the two groups exercised three times a week. After two weeks, both groups showed almost identical increases in their endurance (as measured in a stationary bicycle time trial), even though the one group had exercised for six to nine minutes per week, and the other about five hours. Additionally, molecular changes that signal increased fitness were evident equally in both groups. “The number and size of the mitochondria within the muscles” of the students had increased significantly, Gibala says, a change that, before this work, had been associated almost exclusively with prolonged endurance training. Since mitochondria enable muscle cells to use oxygen to create energy, “changes in the volume of the mitochondria can have a big impact on endurance performance.” In other words, six minutes or so a week of hard exercise (plus the time spent warming up, cooling down, and resting between the bouts of intense work) had proven to be as good as multiple hours of working out for achieving fitness. The short, intense workouts aided in weight loss, too, although Gibala hadn’t been studying that effect. “The rate of energy expenditure remains higher longer into recovery” after brief, high-intensity exercise than after longer, easier workouts, Gibala says. Other researchers have found that similar, intense, brief sessions of exercise improve cardiac health, even among people with heart disease.

There’s a catch, though. Those six minutes, if they’re to be effective, must hurt. “We describe it as an ‘all-out’ effort,” Gibala says. You’ll be straying “well out of your comfort zone.”

One Day – Day Thirteen

This morning I weighed in at 254 pounds.   That is a 0 change from yesterday and 0 change overall.  The Big Goal is to lose approximately 100 pounds in 50 weeks one way and one day at a time.  This is Day 13 .  This is the second day of Week Three

One Way – Way Thirteen

Pillar Goals – Today I will take some time to think about pillar goals.  I will set an Action Goal for each pillar.

The big goal is to lose 100 pounds. This is a great thing as far as it goes.  It is a solid smart goal, but it is also long term.  It is life changing because underneath that goal is the goal to live a life that allows me to reach and maintain a healthy weight.   Healthy habits support a healthy weight.

What are the habits I need to create to be healthy and lose weight?  What do I need to be looking at to reach my goal?  Today I will spend some time thinking on this and discover what pillars goals will support my Big Goal.

I know that eating healthy is one pillar and activity is another.  I know that stress and lack of sleep are bad.   Today I will set three to five pillar goals to help support my Big Goal.

This is day thirteen, my goal today is to set pillar goals.

Yesterday -

I  didn’t walk  for 30 minutes. I probably walked that much at the store but I am not sure.   4 weeks and 5 days more

I didn’t eat in front of the computer or TV - I will track this goal for 4 weeks and 4 days more.

I drank more than my eight 8-ounce glasses of water. I will track this goal for 4 weeks and 3 days more.

I have set a goal - 50 weeks to lose 100 pounds. Thank you for stopping by and reading here.  Being able to share this process helps me stay focused everyday and keep working toward my goal.  Thank you for your comments and support.

Life Without The Scale…

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I have been living the last couple of months without a bathroom scale. My curiosity is killing me. I’m to the point that when I take my laundry into be done, maybe I’ll just jump on the scale they have for weighing my clothes to see if I’ve gained or lost. (I’m pretty sure without my own kitchen either, it’s probably a gain).

For me, the scale and I have never been “friends” but it did help me at least keep track of things. While it didn’t stop me from gaining the 50 pounds I did, it did help prevent me from getting worse. I just refused to go over that 200 lbs. marker. LOL. I know some advocate only weighing yourself once a week, and others say to throw the scale away, that your body image etc. shouldn’t be tied to that, but alas, I cannot let go.

Due to being out of my house for the last month and a half I’ve been eating my share of fastfood. This is not normally my choice. Up until recently I hadn’t had a fastfood burger in months. I usually think about something, decide I can make it cheaper and healthier at home, and pass it by.

I have picked up some good habits though which is why I’m so curious about the number on the scale. I now eat breakfast every morning about 8:30. Before I would be working and lucky if I had a piece of toast before noon. I know that’s not good for the metabolism.

The other good thing that’s happened is I’m not drinking nearly as much. I may have one or two in the evening or maybe not. Compared to the 5 glasses of wine I was putting down every nite, that’s a 500 calorie drop right there. So I’m hoping that has helped balance out the calories from the fastfood. (Who am I trying to kid, right?) But I’m getting tired of burgers, etc. and have been expanding into TV dinners that are microwavable. Now, if I just start buying nothing but SmartOnes and Lean Cuisine, I could conceivably start losing. This all could turn out to be a good thing after all. LOL.

Exercise? My oldest daughter reminded me the Aids Walk is only a month away. If this tells you how good I’ve been doing on my walking, I tried to talk my way out of it. She wasn’t having any. I guess I better get on it. At least being right downtown, they’re long blocks to walk around.
