Tollie-Beware of Junk Foods Being Promoted As Health Food - HFCS is Not Healthy

Also, we are in the process of a complete overhaul of some of our sites into one hub. A Dream-Infused world. Here is one piece of the new site, let me know what you think! Take a look.

You may have seen a whole new slew of advertisements online and on television trying to revamp the poor image of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). They are basically trying to promote this junk food additive as “healthy”.

The advertising campaigns don’t come right out and make the claim that high fructose corn syrup is “health food”, but they do try to get clever and fool people into thinking that it’s not bad for your health. In fact, they make these misleading claims:

“It’s all natural”

“It’s no worse for you than table sugar”

“It’s made from corn”

“It has the same calories as table sugar”

As you can see, these ads are trying to deceive us into thinking that HFCS isn’t so bad after all… I mean, they do say that it’s “all natural” and “made from corn”. These ads are pure sleaze!

In my opinion, these ads are highly immoral. For one, as if our nation, and the world for that matter, wasn’t already suffering an obesity epidemic, as well as skyrocketing degenerative diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Now, they’re trying to make matters worse by fooling innocent people into thinking that high fructose corn syrup is somehow healthy. Meanwhile, as society and our kids get fatter and more unhealthy, they’re lining their pockets with massive profits since HFCS is in the majority of processed food.

As for their claim that HFCS is “no worse for you than sugar”… I’m not even going to discusss any of the science about how HFCS affects the leptin and insulin process in your body, your blood sugar process, appetite levels, etc. Instead, I want to make a more important point:

Who cares if HFCS is “no worse for you than sugar”… because sugar is one of the worst things you can ingest in your body anyway, so it is not even a valid argument!

The point you need to understand is that if you want to be lean and healthy for life, you should be minimizing, or even eliminating all sugar and high fructose corn syrup. In fact, most processed food should be eliminated altogether if you want to be serious about getting lean.

As for their claim that HFCS is “all-natural”… don’t even get me started! It’s just a ridiculous statement to begin with. I don’t care if you call it “natural” or artificial, the bottom line is that it’s a highly processed, refined substance that makes you fat!

So the next time you’re thinking about drinking that can of soda, or eating that candy bar or cupcakes, just think about how that is only going directly against your efforts to lose body fat and can even lead to other health problems in excess.

Train Like a Fighter and Look Like One Too!!!

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2009 — Posted in Fat loss

Have you ever looked at high intensity athletes such as martial artists (MMA Fighters), track stars, gymnasts, etc, and wonder how and why they have a physique like that of a bodybuilder posing at the night of their showing? You see 6-pack abs, ripped muscles, and basically just a lean mean fighting machine? These high intensity athletes are not freaks of nature (well, some of ‘em are), but more or less people who have truly maximized their genetic potential through High Intensity Training. Whether it is their profession or a passion, you can see across the board the effects of their training. One class of high intensity athletes are martial artists such as MMA (Mixed Martial Artists) Fighters.

As of late, you have seen the explosion of MMA into the mainstream affecting everything from clothing lines, media, pay-per-view, haircuts (kidding), etc. But when you look at how these high intensity athletes train, it is amazing. There is something to be said about the energy demands and requirements for this type of training. This form of training is anaerobic (without oxygen) in nature and has what we call an “afterburn” effect aka EPOC (Excess Post Oxygen Consumption). Unlike traditional cardio aerobic programs where you stop burning once you stop your exercise, anaerobic exercise keeps on going for hours afterwards thus maximizing fat loss! It is the Energizer Bunny of fat loss! Keeps going and going and going…

Although many cannot handle the actual intensity of how hard Martial Artists truly train, you can still get involved in high intensity training starter programs and maximize the benefits from it. As you progress, you can increase the workload and change up the routine to accommodate your progressions. So how many calories can you burn? Well, let me just say that your body composition determines that. Obviously if you are heavier, your energy demands are greater. For example, did you know that you can burn up anywhere from a low end of 300-600 calories OR 800-1200 calories per hour of boxing training? Those numbers are dependent upon the body mass of the individual. But before you get excited about your fat loss journey, keep in mind most people CANT go for an hour of boxing let alone 15 minutes. Now remember, boxing is one format of a high intensity exercise. You are missing the point here if you start buying gloves and a heavy bag. I’m talking about high intensity training and using martial artists as an example.

Look at the example below demonstrating high intensity vs traditional cardio training below:

- 154 pound person who runs at a pace of 8 mph will burn 320 calories in 20 minutes. That same person, walking at 3 mph for an hour, will burn 235 calories.

Now take that into your training protocol and you will see that you do NOT have to train for an hour. Train Smarter not just harder. The Strong and Sexy bootcamp program with Element 5 Fitness has incorporated this form of training into their programming. All over the Eastside clients are experiencing fat loss with this type of training. From 25-50+ pounds of fat loss, you may wonder why participants at the Strong and Sexy Bootcamp classes are experiencing this phenomenon. Well, if you were paying attention to the paragraphs above then you would know why!

I have included some of the sample workouts below that were incorporated in our Strong and Sexy Bootcamps classes. This is a 30 second format PER exercise. You cycle through the three exercises one after another WITHOUT rest. The only real rest you will probably get is a 5 second transition between stations.

30 second format EACH exercise EQUALS ONE SET:

- Bench Press OR Band Punches 30 seconds

- Reverse Lunge with Band Row

- Jump Rope OR explosive cardio format

Repeat these exercises 4 or 5 times through! That itself covers a quick six to seven and a half minutes! Once you combine 3 – 4 formats of this type of training, you will have covered at least 20-30 minutes of a high intensity type of training. If you dare, try this format and adjust the intensity and tempo to get a killer workout! Welcome to the FITNESS WARRIOR LIFESTYLE!!!

Yours in health,

Belton

Blah…

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2009 — Posted in Losing weight

Blah...I’m having one of those “blahhhh” sort of diet days. I didn’t want to go jogging this morning at all. It took every bit of strength I had to get my butt out of bed at 5:45am.

I’ve fallen off the diet wagon the last few days. I’ve been testing recipes for Easter, and lets face it…. how can you possibly cook all that yummy food and not taste any yourself???

So now, I find myself getting really lazy. I feel so much better when I follow the diet. But lately, I’ve found that I just feel tired all the time. Not sure why. Everything feels like a challenge. A vacation would be nice, but who has the money for that these days!?? I know I sure don’t. There’s a reason we are living with my in-laws, and it isn’t because we have money to burn, that’s for sure.

So now, I find myself really struggling. I think everyone goes through this phase when dieting. The initial enthusiasm wears off, and you get down to the “nitty-gritty” of losing weight. It’s so difficult to find that enthusiasm again. I envy people who love to exercise and play sports. They always seem to have so much darn energy. I think I’m just a natural born slug.

Well, there’s always tomorrow. I just have to focus on my goals, and get them fresh in my mind. Besides, it’s almost time to post my new measurements for the month! Yikes!

Eat Stop Eat

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2009 — Posted in Fat loss

We are already at week 5 of our 12 week training plan with Jon Le Tocq and after an “easy” week last week it is now time to step it up a gear with both the training and eating plan.

Last night I did a challenging “Leg matrix” workout and already really feeling my glutes complaining! Got a real strength training workout to do tonight.

We are now introducing the Eat Stop Eat plan which involves strategic intermittent fasting to help shift body fat.  At first I could not imagine going 24 hours without eating but now I have done it twice I am happy to recommend people to research it further and try it for themselves if they are looking to shift extra body fat, once they are eating “clean”.

You can find out more at ” Eat Stop Eat“.

Keep on moving …

Dance is a great way to keep fit

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2009 — Posted in Fat loss

StreetdanceAs many of you know I have performed in my first STREETDANCE show (well 4 actually) at the weekend and it was great fun.  Some of the dancers were in more than one dance, some in about 5 or 6, so at the end the sweat was dripping off them and they had big smiles on their faces. Most of them also had very flat stomachs and toned bodies!

When was the last time you had a workout with a big smile on your face at the end as well as lots of sweat (or a healthy glow if you are a lady!). If you are missing either of these then you are either not working hard enough, or you need to choose something you enjoy doing.

Streetdance is only 1 type of dancing you could try. How about Salsa, Ballroom, Jive, Belly dancing, Flamenco and many more. Just check  out a search engine to see what is on offer in your area. It’s a great way to make friends too. Check out www.freshvibesdance.com to see if there is something in your area.

ps Don’t use the excuse of being too old as it doesn’t matter - I am older than most of the Streetdancers but can still have fun!

THE FRONT SQUAT

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2009 — Posted in Fat loss

If you haven’t checked it out already, get into Precision Nutrition’s site. They have a ton of information on nutrition and exercise that could be put to good use.
I found this interesting analysis of a paper comparing the efficacy and wear-and-tear effects of the two commonest types of squats (front and back) on the knee joint.
I had already read this paper and the conclusions, but you can go ahead with this article.

The Front Squat is a great exercise alright, but the problem is that you probably need spotters and/or a squat rack if you want to pull heavy. If you don’t have these, you could use a Smith Machine, but this is a poor second, as the machine describes a straight line movement and your core muscles are not put to the test as in the free squats.
The main problem with front squats (when you have good form in it), in my experience, is the inability of the squatter to extend the wrists to the extent needed to hold the weights while going down and coming up. A related problem is the issue of putting the weights back in place once the exercise is done. If you use a crossed grip style, it becomes even more difficult to lay the bar down. Beginners can do front squats with just a barbell or with light dumbbells, but should up the ante soon, as these are the ones where you should hit it hard and heavy to lose that tyre of fat, and get stronger in your legs and back.
Whatever it is, the front squats are great exercises that every person must do, even those (I would even say especially those) who have painful knees.
For a detailed and extremely intelligent analysis of squats, I can’t find one better than the Squatting 101 at Mike Robertson’s site (one of the treasure troves of kinesiology info in the net).

Bootcamper of the month!

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2009 — Posted in Fat loss

Well done to Jane for being the “Bootcamper of the month” and receiving a special gift in recognition of turning up to every session on time, with a smiling face and putting 100% effort in. Despite her dislike of inchworms, she never once complained, or maybe I just never heard her complain!

Everyone else deserves a well done for all their hard work and it was nice to catch up with people at the social.

Several people have said how they will miss not coming to Bootcamp over these few weeks off, but I know they will be disciplined enough to do some exercise on their own in order to maintain their fitness before we step it up a notch at the next camp which starts on April 27th for 4 weeks.
