When the nice weather rolls around, a lot of people start doing slow, boring cardio workouts outside. But if they really wanted to get more results in less time, they would be better off doing higher intensity interval training either by running or on a bike.
Research shows that intervals are even more effective than slow cardio workouts (like jogging) for fat loss. In addition, for distance runners, intervals of 2-5 minutes are very helpful for improving performance.
But for fat loss workouts, I tend to use a nice simple 30-second interval length for fat burning benefits. As you change the interval length, you change the way your body responds to the training.
To get the most out of your training program and fat burning efforts, make sure you:
Finish each interval workout with stretching for the tight muscle groups only.
Perform the interval sessions 3 times per week.
Change your interval training workouts every 4 weeks.
Here is a sample interval workout.
Warm up for 5 minutes.
Work at an 8/10 level of intensity for 60 seconds. (A 10/10 intensity is running for your life, so adjust accordingly). Your heart rate should be near maximal by the end of the interval.
Follow that with active rest for 60 seconds at a 3/10 level of intensity. (Active rest means walking or pedaling at a very slow rate.)
Repeat for 6 intervals. Finish with 5 minutes of cool-down exercise at 3/10 level of intensity.
With this simple workout, you can enjoy the great outdoors while making the most of your exercise time.

Jan. 26, 2005 -- Need another healthy reason to drink green tea? Aside from fighting heart disease, cancer, and other diseases, a new study shows that drinking green tea may also fight fat.
The study showed that people who drank a bottle of tea fortified with green tea extract every day for three months lost more body fat than those who drank a bottle of regular oolong tea.
Researchers say the results indicate that substances found in green tea known as catechins may trigger weight loss by stimulating the body to burn calories and decreasing body fat.
The findings appear in the January issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Green Tea: Fat Fighter?
Black tea, oolong tea, and green tea come from the same Camellia sinensis plant. But unlike the other two varieties, green tea leaves are not fermented before steaming and drying.
Most teas contain large amounts of polyphenols, which are plant-based substances that have been shown to have antioxidant, anticancer, and antiviral properties.
However, green tea is particularly rich in a type of polyphenols called catechins. These substances have also been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, but recent research in animals show that catechins may also affect body fat accumulation and cholesterol levels.
In this study, researchers looked at the effects of catechins on body fat reduction and weight loss in a group of 35 Japanese men. The men had similar weights based on their BMI (body mass index, an indicator of body fat) and waist sizes.
The men were divided into two groups. For three months, the first group drank a bottle of oolong tea fortified with green tea extract containing 690 milligrams of catechins, and the other group drank a bottle of oolong tea with 22 milligrams of catechins.
During this time, the men ate identical breakfasts and dinners and were instructed to control their calorie and fat intake at all times so that overall total diets were similar.
After three months, the study showed that the men who drank the green tea extract lost more weight (5.3 pounds vs. 2.9 pounds) and experienced a significantly greater decrease in BMI, waist size, and total body fat.
In addition, LDL "bad" cholesterol went down in the men who drank the green tea extract.
The catechin content varies by amount of green tea used and steeping time. But general recommendations, based on previous studies on the benefits of green tea, are at least 4 cups a day. Green tea extract supplements are also available.
Researchers say the results indicate that catechins in green tea not only help burn calories and lower LDL cholesterol but may also be able to mildly reduce body fat.
"These results suggest that catechins contribute to the prevention of and improvement in various lifestyle-related diseases, particularly obesity," write researcher Tomonori Nagao of Health Care Products Research Laboratories in Tokyo, and colleagues.

I have to admit I feel pretty discouraged right now.
I posted my grand "plan" to kick myself in the ass and get back to doing the things that I *know* I should be doing in order to lose weight and then I pretty much ignored it all week. And of course I'm full of excuses... I had to work late, I haven't slept enough, I went out with friends, someone kidnapped me and shoveled fattening food in my mouth... blah, blah, blah. But the bottom line is I could have eaten right. I could have exercised. I could have recorded all my food and focused on doing the right things, but I didn't.
Seriously, after all this time, and all this work, am I really so fucking weak and stupid that I'm going to allow myself to gain back every pound that I've worked so hard to lose?
For months and months and months now I've told myself that more than just my pants size was changing... that *I* was changing... that the essential bits that make up my character and define what's important to me were changing too. I've convinced myself that by shifting my priorities and focusing on making myself healthy, in all ways, that I was doing more than just losing weight, that I was changing... that i was evolving, maturing and growing. But how can that be true when it takes so little for me to fall right back into the patterns that, seriously, nearly killed me?

Saw four different guys doing barbell bicep curls in a squat rack today. There's an entire section of the gym devoted to curls. WTF?
I bet all those guys thought I was the freak.
Squat - 160x5. 160x5. 160x5
These felt really heavy. My depth was horrible. I think the fear of back pain is holding me back. I didn't hurt myself but I kept thinking it was only a matter of time. I've got to get that idea out of my head. If I'm not getting deep then I'm wasting my time doing these.
Bench - 140x5, 140x5, 140x5
I didn't think about squeezing the bar here. The weight isn't enough to worry me yet, obviously, so it wasn't a problem. Need to get this right.
Deadlift - 190x5
TOUGH. I was literally scraping my thighs all the way up on every rep. That was the only way I could get it up. No back issues.

So today I was hoping I would continue the downward trend on my weight...even two days into it. Well, the day started with me eating sugar coated prepackaged cinnamon rolls. 600 calories worth. Blechhh.
Then I got home and was starving so much that I ate a large chunk of barbecue chicken. I immediately decided to make nachos for the kids so I took out a block of Velveeta and prepared it for them, and for me. I ended up enjoying the warm melted cheese so much that I stuffed my fat face to the point of overeating.
I'm sure the scales are not going to be in my favor tomorrow morning.

Yesterday was a landmark for the BBG blog as I reached 10,000 hits! Thank you all for taking the time to check in on me and I hope you have enjoyed the site.
Not much in the way of news. Daily weigh-in shows my weight is holding steady after coming off the 2-week detox. Workouts are mostly on schedule (although I had an unscheduled day off yesterday), and eating is going well. Sticking to my WW points allowance, except today when chocolate cake at work took me around half a point over. Doubt I'll have much difficulty making that up tomorrow.
I didn't get home from work today till around 7 and I had a nap for about an hour. Obviously my workout was on my mind since I dreamed that I was doing it. I woke up at 8.30, hot, bothered, dry mouthed, and sluggish, and was quite put out to find that I had to do it AGAIN! I wonder if you burn extra calories when you dream you're exercising. Anyhow, that's all for now. 'night all.

. Weight loss, muscle gain, happy smiles of a happier life. People fulfilled by their physical achievements. Slicing those slabs of fat off of their bodies once and for good is an amazing accomplishment.
But afterwards many feel the deflated wallet in their pocket. It's then that in their pursuit of weight loss they realized they've lost more than just weight, they lost money. They lost the dollars that their own blood and time gave to them.
I am not saying investing in your health is bad. Quite the contrary, investing in your health is one of the smartest financial assets you could ever give to yourself. It is the thing that will drive you to bring home the other sorts of bacon and dough that life thrives upon. I just believe there is a better way.
To be fair to the various popular diets out there, I will show their costs on a weekly basis presented in this table first published on
Diet

The cheapest diet on here, over the course of one month would cost you $274.40. Which is $56.74 more than the average American spends on food.
I prefer to do things simpler as I've said openly on my page. That's why my diet is only 125 dollars, not a week but a month.
Weight loss is good, but it is even better without money loss.

In the US, , a saving of USD $487 billion per year (3.5% of GDP) would be made to the economy. This seems like a huge sum, but is a culmination of all the savings that would be made from:
Gas ($5b): an overweight driver uses 68 more liters of petrol a year. This is also in support of a longtime argument regarding excess luggage on flights. Why should a 60kg lady have to pay for 5kg excess luggage when the person next to her on the plane is a 120kg man with only 6kg less luggage (but 54kg more weight)? It makes no sense. The potential negative consequences of people fasting before they go on flights could be one negative, but I still think it would be a policy worth exploring. I suspect the airlines already have, and have decided it is not a good idea as many of their frequent fliers are overweight. But surely this is something a new/small carrier could introduce? Put a 100kg limit on every passenger I say.
Food (equivalent to 81b loss in sales for McDonalds): eating excess calories.
Clothing ($10b): more material is needed for large sizes.
Health related costs ($140b): Heart Disease, Diabetes, Stroke, Insurance etc.
Productivity at the workplace ($257b): days/time lost to sickness, feeling unwell.
Farmers Sales (20m).
Fat Loss industry ($55b): diet books, supplements, fat loss clinics etc.
And remember this is just the US, and so you can only imagine the cost worldwide...
Admittedly this does not seem to account for the negative consequences of having out of work Tailors, McDonald's workers, Farmers, Jenny Craig support people etc, but is interesting none the less.
